Why is increased water content an issue? Because water has a lower boiling point than the fluid itself. During braking fluid gets heated to very high temperatures – with increased water content it can boil off, degrading braking performance, and in severe cases (quite rare fortunately) it can result in brake failure. Second reason for brake fluid replacement is that repeated heating (during braking) and cooling, and the passage of time, negatively impact brake fluid’s protective chemical properties. Brake fluid replacement is the only way to restore proper chemistry to the brake system.
As previously mentioned, the rule of thumb is to replace brake fluid every 2 years or 24,000 miles. At South Denver Automotive we use a test to determine the condition of the brake fluid and to decide if the replacement is indicated. If your vehicle does need brake fluid replacement, we will drain brake fluid within each line, each hose and caliper, and we will replace it with fresh brake fluid that has mechanical and chemical properties that match manufacturer specifications for your particular vehicle’s brand and model year. We follow brake fluid replacement with a test drive, to make sure the braking system works correctly under real world driving conditions.
