Best Timing Chain Replacement in Denver, CO

Timing Chain Replacement in Denver, CO | South Denver Automotive

Timing chains were designed to replace timing belts, because when the timing belt broke, engine damage (depending on the engine design) could be severe. Since timing chains are made of metal, one would think they would last for the lifetime of the engine, right? So why does South Denver Automotive offer timing chain replacement? Because repair shops have found that while the timing chains, on average, last a very long time, they may have to be replaced due to “stretching”, poor maintenance or manufacturer defects.

So what would be the reason for replacing a timing chain? As it turned out, timing chains do break from time to time – fortunately it is a much less frequent event than when timing belts were the norm. Typically, a timing chain will break because of really poor maintenance or manufacturer defect.

But there is another, more frequent reason for timing chain replacement – timing chains “stretch”. It is not that they get visibly longer, but rather the individual components wear out, sometimes slightly elongate, and over the length of the chain, these small changes add up, causing the engine timing to be off. This may result in trouble codes stored in the onboard computer, the check engine light being illuminated, it could cause poor engine performance, even engine misfires, and sometimes you may hear rattling or ticking noises, particularly when starting up the engine or when it’s idling. In severe cases, the engine might not start at all because the timing is so far off.

So while your vehicle’s timing chain does not need to be changed on a regular schedule, be prepared that at some point in time it will need to be replaced. And if you happen to drive an Audi vehicle, or a Ford Explorer, the probability of needing a timing chain replacement gets much higher. Audi vehicles are known for stretched timing chains, while Ford Explorer, pre-2011 models with 4.0L SOHC V6 engine, had problems with plastic timing chain guides. But timing chain problems can happen to any brand, not just the two mentioned above.

At South Denver Automotive we offer comprehensive car maintenance, so it’s natural that we offer timing chain replacement as well. Good news – timing chains often will offer you a warning before a catastrophic failure:

  1. If you hear rattling or ticking noise when idling, it is an important sign that your vehicle’s timing chain needs attention
  2. Engine misfires or weak power are always a sign that you need a mechanic to inspect your vehicle
  3. If your mechanic finds metal shavings in the engine oil, a failing timing chain could be responsible

At South Denver Automotive we can inspect your vehicle, noting any visual clues that the timing chain may need replacement, and other engine components to make sure everything is working as designed – or to pinpoint the problem that will need to be fixed. Our ASE-certified technicians have extensive engine repair experience, and all repairs are backed by a 40,000 mile / 4 year warranty.
